Parliamentary Submission to the JSCEM Inquiry into civics education, engagement and participation in Australia

27 May 2024

In line with the Susan McKinnon Foundation’s commitment to strengthening Australia’s democracy, we made a submission to the Joint Standing Committee on Electoral Matters (JSCEM) inquiry into civics education, engagement and participation in Australia.

SMF’s submission identified 14 evidence-based areas for the Committee’s attention to strengthen and enhance civic education, as well as exploring ways to tackle additional underlying issues threatening civic engagement, such as promoting a healthy information ecosystem.

These priority areas were identified through key learnings from SMF’s ongoing research, engagement, advocacy, and programs in youth civic engagement, mis- and dis-information, political polarisation and public interest journalism.
